Royal Scotman (later "Apollo")
The Apollo was the new name for the MS Royal Scotsman, the Sea Org flagship. The Royal Scotsman was built in 1936, along with her sister ship Royal Ulsterman, as ferry passenger service vessels between Ireland and Scotland. They were conscripted to war services as Light Troop Landing ships with an admirable decorated war record. Both HMS Royal Scotsman and HMS Royal Ulsterman were involved with the D-Day landings at Juno Beach, however it seems that The Royal Scotsman was in 'home waters' at the time being deployed on a secret training exercises, whilst the Royal Ulsterman (her near twin) was a reserve Flagship for PM Winston Churchill. Hubbard was allegedly involved with amphibious forces at that time and so may have had some knowledge and experience of both ships. This may have affected his decision to purchase the Royal Scotsman in 1967. It is interesting that The Ulsterman served as a ferry shrive between Eire and Scotland for a most of her career and was allegedly later involved in Cold War activities in the Mediterranean Sea. She was sunk off Beirut in 1972 by an Israeli Limpet mine. The inferred "CIA Spy Ship" rumours are well-founded by more than just coincidence alone. The Sea Org sold the Apollo around 1978 when it moved onshore in 1975. The Apollo was later sold to a shipping company who renamed her 'Arctic Star' and she was refitted. She was intended to be used as a 'research vessel' or a floating restaurant. The Apollo met an ignominious fate when written-off by a rogue freight train at Brownsville, Texas in 1983.
